ASNT SA SECTION - GOLF DAY 2009

SA SECTION GOLF DAY A GREAT SUCCESS

All participants had a wonderful golf day at Reading Country Club on 13th October 2009. R12500.00 was raised to add to the SA Section coffers.

After 18 years of inactivity this Section teed off on the golf course to mark the first of many activities lined up for the 2009/10 calendar. Many people involved in NDT got together with a common goal and a singular purpose. The aim was to promote and further goodwill and excellence in an industry that had sadly been divided in South Africa for some time. Everyone agreed that a function like this was long overdue.

Student Evening

The final function held by the ASNT Southern Africa Section in 2009 was a great success.

Two prominent speakers were invited to address NDT students at a student information evening.

Clementine Mosimane, popular tv personality and motivational speaker inspired her audience to take their responsibility in NDT seriously – and to remain true to their professional integrity at all times.

Hugh Neeson, head of Eskom NDT, told insightful stories of his first five years in the NDT profession. By sharing the lessons he learned at the beginning of his career, he helped students to be prepared to overcome problems that they will face working in the NDT field.

The Southern Africa section plan to have more of these informative evenings in 2010.

REGIONAL DIRECTOR visits South African Section

The Southern Africa Section was delighted when David Griffin accepted an invitation to attend a board meeting in Johannesburg on 3 February 2010.

With Level III examinations about to be held in May, the committee was keen to get as much guidance as possible from their Regional Director. David took all present through every aspect of hosting these examinations and running the various training courses that will take place in April.  He also shared valuable advice on running the newly formed Section.

After a very successful and informative meeting there was a little time left to visit a real South African steak house and a trip the next morning to the lion park (where David was only slightly chewed by a rather large cub!)

The Southern Africa Section celebrated Valentine’s Day in a very different way this year. It joined SAINT and The School of Applied Non Destructive Examination by taking a stand together with them at the Air Africa Air Show at Gallagher Estates.

ASNT was represented next to the Civil Aviation Authority and many prominent companies in the aerospace industry. A lot of people were introduced to the Section activities and NDT in general at the show. This exposure caused a buzz of interest and excitement.

Greg Williams, the Section’s Membership Chairman, is planning more events to help to get the Southern Africa Section on the map in the near future.

ASNT Southern Africa hosts Level III exams

History was made in May 2010, when ASNT Level III examinations were held at Denel Saab premises. These examinations have not been held in South Africa for almost 20 years.
South Africa is desperately in need of more qualified ASNT Level III personnel and the Section intends to assist suitably qualified Level II’s to reach their goals.

By inviting Dr Abdul Hassanein from Cairo to invigilate and monitor the examination sessions (assisted by Hugh Neeson and Pat Garland, local ASNT Level III’s) and inviting Mike Mullins and David Davies from Argyll-Ruane, UK, the Section provided the perfect team to make everything happen.

Here are pictures of the first batch of examinees.

Good luck to you all!!
